2008 Books #11: From Idea to Story in 90 Seconds: A Writer's Primer, by Ken Rand

This is a short, straightforward book (89 pages) about preparing the mind to get ideas, then quickly transform the ideas into stories. Rand advocates letting the right brain do the writing--blowing off spelling and grammar for a fast-and-dirty draft--and then switching over to the left brain for the editing. I agree with that concept. I'm still learning how to do it, because I've always been a more slow-and-picky writer, but I can see the benefits of quick drafting to create material to edit. The best thing about the book is that Rand explains both why and *how* to make that happen.

I'm madly in love with Rand's tips for getting ideas from the "Cosmic Stew" and twisting them for originality, followed by more steps that make a lot of sense to me. I'd recommend this book for anyone who has to write anything of any kind on a regular basis.
