2008 Books #36: Writing Great Short Stories, by Margaret Lucke

Schaum's Quick Guide to Writing Great Short Stories impressed me with its brief but well-stated advice on the basic components of writing fiction. I chose it for the sections on setting/atmosphere and developing voice--those are usually underdeveloped or ignored in beginners' writing books--but the sections on characters, conflict, and plot/structure also deliver useful ideas. I've read or heard a lot of the material before, but hearing the same idea in a different way helps me to actually remember and use it. That's important!

I haven't been reading as much as usual lately, what with the trying to do the many other things and all, but I think I'll make it to 50+ books for the year, which will at least prevent me from descending into shame!
