Never thought we'd ever grow apart...

It's been a while since I wrote a decent entry here, hasn't it? *rummages in brain for topics*

The main reason I haven't been reading or writing much in LiveJournal is that I've been trying to finish writing a military science fiction story that I plan to submit to an anthology editor next week. I never expected or intended to write within this subgenre, but I was invited to submit a story and I came up with an idea, so I went with it. You might be surprised to discover that I enjoy reading military sci-fi (and that I like the term "sci-fi" better than "SF"). Given my liberal politics and aversion to real-world wars, I'm surprised, too, but military activities are a great way to explore possible future developments in human civilization. Whether or not the story is included in the anthology that inspired it, I've learned a lot from writing it, and I can think of other places to send it if it's rejected. The deadline for the story is September 30th, but I'm going to send it out before I leave for Context, so that I can be done with thinking about it before my weekend away.

I have a few other things to do between now and Context, as well. I'm supposed to read The Sparrow for a workshop, and the nice thing about the assignment is that I've read it before and know it's an excellent book, but it's been long enough since I read it that I don't remember the details. The point of reading it for the workshop is to be able to discuss the book's unusual structure; that will be interesting!

I've also signed up for a bunch of new writing-related work that I'm not going to talk about specifically just yet, but you all need to understand that I'm going to be very busy from now on! Do not imagine that I'm lounging around at my leisure during the week, sipping nectar and nibbling at sweetmeats. Whatever sweetmeats might be, I'm not having them. Know that. I'll tell you what's keeping me so busy later, I promise.

You tease, you!

Congratulations on finishing the story, though, and hope the editor loves it.

I've found that since I do the history of public health I have to do a lot of military history and I really like it. I also love war movies :)

Go you!

My first two years of NaNo, I pounded a military-vaguely-horror novel. Since then, despite my time in the military & my collection of cool military stuff, and my total uniform fetish, I really haven't written any military fiction at all.

On the other hand, I've got about 13k in the can on the novella I'm working on, and I'm really getting into the swing of the story. I anticipate busting out another good chunk tonight - I made sure to do the "leave off mid-scene so you've got a good place to pick up again" thing. :-).

Looking forward to reading the story, wherever it ends up under your byline. And I wonder if military sci-fi as a subgenre is due for a shift, or at least a broadening, in its political scope as some of the old gung-ho tropes fray at the edges or are exposed as being even less "reality based" than hyperdrives and laser cannons.

Have fun at Context, and congrats on the mysterious writing work.

(Lovely icon, btw.)

Thanks, thanks, thanks, and more thanks. :)

Especially for assuming the story *will* end up somewhere under my byline...

Is there any reason why we shouldn't assume it'll get published?

I don't know about you, but *my* reasons are all about self-doubt. Which I hope to overcome one day!
