Today I'm working on answering author interview questions for those of us who have stories in Space Grunts.* I'm also re-reading Portable Childhoods, by Ellen Klages, so that I don't sit there with nothing to say at the panel about her fiction at WisCon.

The other thing on my agenda is to prepare a list of questions to discuss in the panel I'm moderating at WisCon, on the subject of the etiquette of self-promotion. If you have any thoughts on that subject, please know that I will appreciate any comments about what would be good to discuss. I have my own thoughts about it, but I don't want to miss anything.

In case you didn't see it at the awkward time I posted yesterday, I'm hoping that you'll go here and ask me a question.

Also, I've updated my list of favorite books, so if you're looking for something to read, there you go.

*That link goes to Amazon, but if you don't want to go there for any reason, Space Grunts is available at Powell's.

A couple of my self-promotion no-nos:

1- Don't hijack somebody else's blog for your self-promotion. There's nothing more obnoxious than somebody pimping their project in a comment thread that has nothing to do with it.

2- Don't misuse a convention panel to promote your work. After the initial introductions, only mention your projects if they're pertinent to the discussion. Also, don't set up a wall of your books; it's tacky and distracting. Flash them during the introduction and then put them away.

Those are good no-nos. I think I'm going to have to bring up some stuff about social skills in this panel, since most of the mistakes in self-promotion are examples of poor social skills.

Cool! Interview!
Ooh! The etiquette of self-promotion sounds really interesting! I have no thoughts on it other than I need to get some of it, because I think I'd be a better self-promoter if I had some guidelines.

And thanks for the booklist! YAY! :)

I will post about self-promotion in the future--I'm sure of it. :)
